Finca Tobella
Priorat Red Wine ‘Salt del Llop’ 2021
GRATALLOPS / PRIORAT / SPAIN
Forget what you think you know about red wine – this is where things get interesting. Salt del Llop from Finca Tobella is a Priorat with a personality all its own. It comes from one of Spain’s most exciting wine regions and is also the story of a shared passion that crossed borders.
What can you expect from this Priorat?
Open the bottle and you’re immediately greeted by a complex bouquet of ripe cherries and violets, joined by notes of red liquorice, a touch of black pepper and a hint of vanilla. On the palate, the wine is smooth and velvety, with rounded tannins and a long, fruit-driven finish. A wine that leaves a lasting impression.
Where does the wine come from?
Behind Salt del Llop are John Lipscomb and Núria Tobella, a couple united by their passion for wine. After meeting and falling in love at the University of California, Núria and John took the leap and founded Finca Tobella in 2003.
They began by purchasing four hectares of vineyards in Aubagues near Gratallops and gradually added further parcels, bringing the estate to its present 20 hectares. At around 350 metres above sea level, they work with vines that are in some cases almost a century old, including Carignan and Grenache, alongside Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon.
It’s often the details that make the difference
Salt del Llop is a carefully composed blend of 30% Carignan, 57% Grenache and 13% Cabernet Sauvignon. The grapes are harvested by hand and carefully vinified before the wine spends 14 months ageing in new 300-litre French oak barrels.
The result is a powerful yet refined expression of Priorat – rich in character, shaped by its remarkable terroir and made for those looking for something beyond the ordinary.
